Scrap yards sort metal into two big groups, and knowing which is which helps you sort your pile and understand why different metals are treated differently.
Ferrous metals contain iron
Steel and cast iron are the common ones. Think old appliance frames, steel pipe, rebar, brackets and car parts. They are strong and plentiful, and they rust.
Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron
This group includes copper, aluminum, brass, bronze, lead and most stainless steel. They resist rust, and because they are less common they are usually more valuable per pound. Copper wire and pipe, aluminum gutters and brass fittings are everyday examples.
The magnet test
Hold a magnet to the metal. If it sticks, it is ferrous. If it does not stick, it is non-ferrous (or a stainless steel grade without much magnetism). It takes a few seconds and it is right most of the time.
Why sorting matters
- Clean, separated metal is easier to recycle and generally earns more.
- Mixed piles mean extra handling.
- Removing plastic, wood and other attachments helps.
